Here it is, my best piece of advice regarding the later stages of a wedding in handy bulletpoints!

  • You can never be to prepared or afford to gamble and hope for moments to present itself to you so before the guests are seated you should make time for some set-up shots of the venue. Lots of planning goes into these things and they are also important for the narrative. Be creative but be quick, ideally you’d do this before the ceremony when you do the other exterior and narrative location shots but it’s rare that the whole setup is complete at that time.
  • Once the wedding reach the dinner stage we are in full reportage mode, there is no more need for directing it’s run and gun time. Shooting during the actual meal should be done sparingly, catch people between courses, do some candid portraiture and discretely follow the B&G cruising around the tables.
  • Speeches are important, make sure you cover different angles and alternate viewpoints, we don’t have the luxury of capturing audio so we have to to work that bit harder to capture the true emotions of the spoken words. Don’t forget the guest reactions and be ready for the tears!
  • The cake shot is normally followed by the first dance. If you are lucky enough to be on a dancefloor with some form of lighting I would recommend using this ‘ambient’ light rather than using on-camera flash heads.
  • This captures the ambience in a more realistic and visually pleasing way. If you decide to use flash make sure you have done a few test shots and that the batteries are fresh, the risk of missing moments as the flash recharges is very real.
